I have been looking into how you can exchange your YouTube views to money and make a living through online videos for a long time. This is a lecture Gideon Shalwick gave in LA at the Blog World Expo. I believe his ideas are very good and think everybody can make money for their business, through this business model.

Add More Information To Your Videos.

You really have to add as much information to your videos, as you possible can. Text is really a good way for your future viewers to find your videos. If you have any writing in the video, you need to have the same words in the video information. I know it can seem like a daunting task to write all those small pieces of text for every video you upload. I often try to get around it the easy way by using Wikipedia but it's not ideal because it's never really precise. I use it as I possible can. NOT including any text to go with your videos is not a good idea, if you want success. You really need a lot of words to increase your visibility in the searches. Use your subtitles. If you create the subtitles in the YouTube software, Google gets all the information they need and this will really help you over time.

Rokenbok Toy Company Using YouTube

The world of children’s toys has evolved from wooden blocks to high-end construction sets which stimulate young brains. And the toy industry has changed dramatically as well.

In 1995, Paul Eichen left his corporate gig as an executive at an international data projector company to start the Rokenbok Toy Company. Eichen says, “The concept of uniting robotics with a construction system and creating a classic toy system really interested me.” Until three years ago, his marketing strategy was simple. He reports, “About 80 percent of customers came through specialty toy stores, 20 percent through word-of-mouth, and zero via the Internet.”

When the economy shifted, specialty toy stores began shutting their doors, and Eichen and his team needed to find a new platform to connect with customers and demonstrate how the Rokenbok toy operated. Eichen admits, “It’s not obvious to folks from static images what our toy system is or how you play with it. The construction vehicles are very sophisticated robots within a very sophisticated construction system, but you can’t tell unless you can witness a demonstration of Rokenbok.”

Eichen says, “As the opportunity to demonstrate in toy stores was disappearing, we needed to be creative with new ways which we could demonstrate our toy system. We thought of everything — from renting kiosks in malls during Christmas time to attending events like maker fairs and robotics conferences. Ultimately as we tested different methodologies, we found that creating videos — that not only demonstrated our products, but are really fun and show kids how they can play with Rokenbok — was what really took off for us.”

It also took off for their customers. Rokenbok users also upload videos of themselves playing with their Rokenbok construction systems. Eichen reveals, “There are a lot of teenagers creating YouTube videos. Some of these kids have been playing with Rokenbok for 10 years.” Eichen and the team have tapped into this YouTube community of Rokenbokers.

I see a lot of videos on YouTube and most of them are made by private uploaders but since Google bought the site, more and more businesses have started to produce videos. Most of these companies really struggle to find out how to make their videos interesting and a lot of them really seems to have no clue about what the aim is. This video, made by British hobby company Hornby, is a really good example. This is actually a really interesting video but as far as I know, this won't help them sell their products. It will properly get more people to apply for a job but I really doubt it do any marketing for their products.
First off, the video is named Hornby Uncut, which means nobody that don't know the brand will ever see the video. How should they find it? And why would they be looking for it, unless they already are interested in the company.
Second, the video is about how it is to work at the factory and this really only helps the business, if they are looking for new employees.
If they want to increase the awareness of the brand and sell more products, they really need to make other types of videos. Videos without their name in the title, showing the actual models/kits and TALK about them.

This weekend I attended the Shake Up & Wake Up course, hosted by Art of Living, Copenhagen. It was the first time ever I have taken part in a Yoga class and it was really interesting. I'm sure I will be using meditation way more often in the future and I might go to some more Yoga classes too.

Since AoL had a real life guru flown in from India visiting, I thought we'd make a short interview with him. I teamed up with Mette Marie Bisgård and came up with a few good questions. I will cut the interview up and post a video for each question but I still have major computer issues and running the editor is out of the question. Video Hot Spots

Like everybody else in video marketing, I have really been troubled by my video hot spot graph. If the video is to have any effect, the videos really have to be interesting enough to keep the viewers watching(and hopefully sharing) the video. Must of my graphs are really low so this presented a big challenge for me. How can you improve the hot spot graph?

These three videos were deferentially also an experiment in just that. I believe less is more and the biggest mistake people make is showing too much. What I wanted to show was a really short look at some premium work, getting the viewers so curious the will leave YouTube and go see the pictures.

I also believe this applies to all kind of videos. Even tutorials. General speaking, I think the length of the videos should be the length of the speak, if that makes any sense. Keep your viewers starving for more.

How to use YouTube to drive traffic to your website

I don't or didn't really have or need a website but I wanted to understand what a video needs to be able to move traffic from the YouTube video to another website. I have tried to contact different YouTube users to make experiments with their channel but I have had a hard time convincing people why this is important.

When you create a website/shop/forum, it's always hard to get traffic to the page. Most first-timers simply expect people to come by them self. This is possible but very hard and almost impossible to plan for. Next step for most people is to run a Google AdWords campaign. I believe you don't need to pay ANY money to Goggle for a useless and expensive adds. I have seen where and how the adds gets placed and I really think it's money out the window.

Of cause it works. The rule of spam is king and if you keep your campaign running, with the right search words, your business will expand. If you only use Google AdWords, I believe your growth can only be linaer. The more money you spend, the more traffic you will receive.

If you already know the right search words for your business, I really believe you are better of spending the money on making videos and I intend to prove that. All you really need is a video camera, some computer skills and a lot of passion for what you do.

These three videos are my experiments and to get the full effect I had to make them about something I'm passionate about. I build scale models in my spare time and the hobby is a really big passion in my life. This is important because, it's your ability to transfer this feeling into your videos, that will get people to leave YouTube.

I have researched and discovered three beautiful models, that inspired me and tried to make some unique presentations. The idea in the videos, is to relate the models to something real-life and by adding related footage, I think I have achieved just that. I'm trying to show as little of the models as I can but enough for other modellers to realize this is something extraordinary and click the link to see the pictures.

Why is my [YouTube] viewcount frozen?

It has really been some strange days on YouTube. All my channels have been running completely rampage and for a while I thought I had done something wrong and was punished by Google. The view-counter had completely stopped and for two full days my videos from ALL my channels had been seen by 0(zero) people.

Luckily I can check a lot of YouTube Insight's from all over the globe and quickly discovered they all looked the same. Most people don't have this option and have no way to discover it's not a local problem.

Yesterday YouTube set up a page reading this:

YouTube employs proprietary technology to prevent the artificial inflation of a video’s viewcount by spam bots, malware and other means. We validate views to ensure the accuracy of the viewcount of all videos beginning with the first view. This validation process becomes publicly visible when the viewcount reaches 300. At this point, the viewcount may slow or temporarily freeze until we have time to verify that all further views are legitimate. Rest assured that the views system is working as intended, and that the viewcount will update as soon as the system has verified the legitimacy of the views.

Known Issue: Viewcount outage from July 11th-July 18th

You may notice some inconsistencies between your Insight view count and public view count (e.g. watch page view count) for the week of July 11th. Please be assured that any views not currently updated are still being recorded. We hope to have any view count discrepancies resolved as soon as possible, but note that it may take a couple of days.

Insight and YouTube Analytics are missing some viewcount data from late July 11th to July 18th.
Public viewcounts are missing some viewcount data over the same range, though it may not correlate to the missing Insight info (ie: though both incorrect, public viewcount may be different than the Insight numbers).
Daily Stats, Daily Reports, and Weekly Reports are also affected.
All views from July 18th forward are being counted correctly in both Insight and public viewcounts.
All views from the outage period (7/11-7/18) will slowly be added back, however this may take some time and we don't have an ETA for this at the time being.
Lastly, there should be no impact to your revenues from this month - AdSense reporting and earnings were not effected by this issue.

I seriously don't get it. If this was a planned operation by YouTube/Google, why weren't we informed in advance? And if a video is activated it has to count as a view, no matter if it's a bot or a person activating it. Otherwise our Insight's will become completely unreliable. We will never know if the information we get is a true representation or just what Google accepts. This is Google/YouTube saying a tree falling, with nobody around, doesn't make a sound.

I have just released two new videos in an ambitious experiment to move traffic out of YouTube and have been glued to my monitor to see the effects. On the video page, one of the videos has 1200 views but doesn't count any more. If I look at the Insight, it's 1800 but if I look at the graphs and add the days up, I get a third number. Two full days of information is completely gone and about 7 days looks completely distorted. YouTube tells us the information is stored and will be released later but how can we trust the information now? And why, oh why, don't you guys tell us in advance?

Does your YouTube Insight, for the last couple of days, look anything like this? I have the opportunity to log in to a lot of channels, from all over the world and I can assure you, it's not your wrong doing. I have checked about 20 different Insight's and they all look the same. Nobody has gotten any views. To me, this looks like something major is going on and as usual Google doesn't give us any real insight to what the problem is. I have been looking a bit around and I can't find any news or information on the subject.

Everybody says;Twitter is a social network that you can use to help you make money. I simply don't understand the site and haven't really been paying it any attention. I am getting very curious about Twitter though and I think I will have to do some experiments with the site and find out what it can do. Because of that I am paying really close attention to all videos I find on the topic.

This is a great video but the information in it really goes for all social media platforms. Don Crowther explains why only 1 in 50 Twitter posts should be selling something on today's Twit Tippin Tuesday. He believes you should be regularly be posting other people's stuff to your Twitter feed. Don introduces two Twitter concepts, aggregation and curation, and which of these will help you make money using Twitter.

Facebook vs. YouTube videos

I just saw this video today. It's an new upload from a local user. The video is great. Good music, beautiful shorts and some very nice settings. From my point of view, it's a nightmare because if you really look at it, the video has nothing but a lot of famous people at the PeopleSeiMei launch in Copenhagen. Tagging a video like this is very hard because you only got the location, the event and the people in the video. No content. Nothing wrong with that but videos like that can be uploaded to Facebook with much greater success, because you are able to directly tag the people in the video.

I'm having a hard time getting small businesses convinced of the importance of making videos. Here, Bruce Clay, really cuts it down to one sentence: If the competition has video & you don't, competition wins.

Take a look at this video and look at it this way. You need to have one or more videos on every search topic you want your business to be found under. If it's a strong search word(s) you might need to make a series on the specific topic.

I have made a 6 months deal with HRQ-TV from down under, to build their channel and get the subscriber base needed to make the show. At the moment they are just shy of one thousand subscribers and only get 300 to 500 views a day.

They have a lot more potential and I don't think it will be hard to improve this drastically. RHQ-TV is a new wargaming channel with a global network. They deliver footage and reports from all over the globe and collaborate with several other YouTube channels. I predict, they will have about minimum 5000 subs and a daily view rate over 1500, when the 6 months run out.

I really hope I will get them a lot further but that is up to fate or randomness...

Free Monty Python Videos on Youtube Lead to 23000% DVD Sale Increase

Following up on our previous news regarding Monty Python material on iTunes, Mashable is now reporting on a staggering increase of Monty Python DVDs sold on Amazon soon after the Python crew made some of their their more popular materialfree on Youtube. And by staggering, I mean 23,000% worth. Mashable notes that Monty Python’s DVDs climbed to the #2 spot on Amazon’s Movie’s and TV Bestseller List, and you don’t have to be a genius to follow that the sales were probablyinfluenced by the Amazon links found on all of their Youtube clips.

When launching their massive Youtube effort, Monty Python made their intentions fairly clear:

“We’re letting you see absolutely everything for free. So there! But we want something in return. None of your driveling, mindless comments. Instead, we want you to click on the links, buy our movies & TV shows and soften our pain and disgust at being ripped off all these years.”

With this news, it seems their “crazy plan” was a success—and why wouldn’t it be? After all, most of their sketch material is tailor made for the typical Youtube viewer, and it’s not as if they would have been better served by a traditional television marketing campaign.

While I’m glad that the Monty Python crew is getting richer (they certainly deserve it), I’m more interested in what this massive success spells for the entertainment industry. Could it be, despite all of the RIAA and MPAA’s clamoring about piracy killing their business, that free and less restrictive content is actually the answer to their woes? We’ve seen other entertainment artists have similar success with free content, and it seems the music industry is finally wising up to DRM-free music, so it’s not as if the possibility is altogether foreign.

Wired’s Chris Anderson argues this point in a recent cover story, and I would have to agree with him. At this point offering a certain amount of content for free (as we see on Hulu, Last.FM, and countless other sites and services) seems like one of the best ways to convince consumers to actually pay for media.

All of this points to a simple, yet seemingly elusive, fact: Treating your consumers like criminals may not be the best way to convince them to buy your shit. Just sayin.

This first graph shows the complete time line for one of my videos. The video itself is unimportant but it's what I can a static video because you have no visual or verbal human interaction. A lot of people post videos like that but it's very hard to get views on these videos. Over the years I've experimented whit tags, video descriptions and titles and on this graph it should be quit clear what happens when you do a decent job. It took me a couple of months before I actually did it because this video don't matter.

Before I renamed and re-tagged it, the video had a Danish title and was therefore, almost exclusive watched in Denmark.

By changing the name to an English I managed to keep my Danish viewers and get a lot of views form overseas.

YouTube Insight

Karma Kanonen:

KK really had problems with the daily views and got most of the from their own site.

After we signed them it have started to pick up and now they get about 25% via searches.

They are most popular in Denmark but they are setting up a shop in Poland too so it will change.

Modellours Workshop:

The channel was idle for a while but after launch, it has been working it's magic.

The graph is interesting because no new videos were added but the daily view rate still keeps climbing.

Because of the channels content, the views are worldwide but we still maintain a strong base in Denmark.

Nightology Records:

The up's and down's of Clara Sofie & Rune RK.

By re-tagging and re-titling the video we managed to grab all the views until the video were flagged.

Clara Sofie's video were almost only viewed in Denmark(Greenland), for obvious reasons.

Pharfar:

So many quality videos but Pharfar still get any views until he released his Christmas song.

We managed to use the hype and get the video to grow even more.

Pharfar is not really known outside Scandinavia but that will change.
Because of our network, he already got a new fanbase in Kenya.

Battle of the Embedded Players

My last post was sort of a battle of the embedded players and I have to say YouTube clearly came out on top. I didn't really expect that and I really wanted the Vimeo player to win but the audio and the pictures don't match up. The video has about 10 seconds delay to the sound and even though I'm not saying anything, this is simply NOT good enough. Vimeo also have the best looking player and a very kool auto-play function but it has no thumb-nail and that's really a bummer, if you don't use the auto-play. The link to Facebook simply broke and the player looks like crap so it most deferentially lost...

On another note. I found a really kool YouTube channel and blog today. An British artist named Michelle or Mitsi. Her videos are interesting to follow and really inspiring too.

Modellours Workshop Spring Season 2011

Today I signed a 3 months YouTube Manager trial deal, with Gallery Beck-Fischer. I will be helping with the VSEO in an effort to optimize the Google search results for the gallery. This may include a lot of work, in the beginning because the desired keywords and tagwords are new to me. No biggie...

If Line and Kaare chooses to stay on, after the trail, I think, I will be able to promote Gallery Beck-Fischer and Theater Får302 together. This is deferentially not to save time but to utilize their separate contacts to create a combined network.

When I sign the next client, with a similar audience, I will add their contacts to the network. This way, the network will grow exponential, as I, over time, include more YouTube channels.

This properly means I will have to get cracking and start to make my videos. Kaare knows a bit about SEO so I'm really looking forward to some teamwork. Maybe I can learn something too...

Day 10: That Girl's Got Potential

Happy new year everybody. 2010 has been a very strange year for me and I kinda hope 2011 will be a easier one. I will start to make post here on my blog more frequently as my business grows and I learn new tricks of the trade.

Janey Elrod's video reached 3.000 views on new years eve and I'm really happy the network received her so well. I really feel she's the one with potential and not the boy's she's sinning about.

Her video reached 3.400 views but I realize, I might not get her the full million, without a better video. I'm looking for somebody to make one so if anybody have any good ideas, please contact me.

I will keep helping her and blog about it here.

I found a girl on YouTube, last night and I think I'm in love with her music. Her featured song only had 158 views, when I found it and was uploaded the 17th Dec. I will try and change that because she's really got star potential. It's not often I hear music and don't have anything I want to change. Maybe a high-hat, the levels or add something. This song is just Janey Elrod and her guitar but the track is perfect, as is. I will use this blog to show the progress...

YouTube lavede, for nogle måneder siden, mulighed for at lægge annotations på videoer. Man skal selvfølgelig have en profil og være logget ind, men så er det stort set også kun ens egen fantasi, der sætter grænserne. Man kan desværre ikke linke ud fra YouTube og det er heller ikke sikkert, at det nogensinde kommer. Men man kan bruge det at f.eks. lave interaktive videoer, hvor seerene træffer valgene og bestemmer, hvad de vil se. Jeg brugte hele sidste weekend på at lave en ny video og et menu system, så man kan bevæge sig rundt i mellem mine videoer.

Hvis der skulle være nogen, som skulle være i tvivl, så er jeg stor fan af model jernbane.

Det er lige ud ad landevejen at lave. Det kan godt være lidt tungt at arbejde med, men opsætningen er super simpel. Hvis man kan finde ud at klippe en video og uploade den, skulle man også kunne gå til det her.

Det er ialt 5 film. Selve menuen, de to loops, timelapse og the main feature. De to loops blev uploadet, til en af mine hobby kanaler, allerede dagen efter de blev optaget. Timelapse, en uge senere, på min egen kanal. De har til sammen fået næsten 25.000 views siden i sommers men er faldet til ro har fundet deres naturlige leje. Da jeg uploadede menuen og selve filmen i søndags, kunne jeg meget hurtigt se, at alle filmene blev aktive igen. Jeg kunne også se at stort set ingen, nøjes med at se en af dem, men bliver nysgerrige og skal se alle 4.

since i bought my new camera, i've been having all sorts of problems editing my videos. i edited in wmm with my old cam but it's not compatible with sony's format. and if i convert form sony to wmm format i the video looses way too much quality. i've been searching for answers but i'm NOT good with computers. so at this point i ONLY use about 25 percent of my recorded footage because i can only publish 'stand-alone' shots like this...

but it's a BIG problem when i can't edit two videos together

and i really want on my videos to end with my vignette

but i've heard rumors about a YouTube Editor i wanted to check it out. my thought was that since it's all ready on youtube, it shouldn't loose any quality. i'm still waiting for the result as i write this... it apparently takes forever to process because i've been waiting for an hour already and it's still.
